Winter Plumbing Preparation for Central Connecticut Homes
Cold weather can expose weak points in a home's plumbing. A few checks before freezing temperatures arrive can help protect pipes and fixtures.
Disconnect outdoor hoses
Remove garden hoses and confirm outdoor hose bibs are closed. If the home has interior shutoffs for those lines, close them and drain the exposed section when the plumbing setup allows.
Protect exposed pipes
Pipes in unheated crawlspaces, garages, and exterior walls need protection from cold air. Insulation helps, but it does not correct a missing heat source or a draft.
Keep mechanical spaces accessible
Do not block the water heater, well equipment, shutoff valves, or service access with stored items. Clear access makes inspection and maintenance easier.
Know the signs of freezing
A fixture that stops flowing, a pipe that bulges, or moisture near a pipe should be addressed promptly. Turn off the water when appropriate and avoid applying an open flame to frozen plumbing.
